The close to horizontal version was my previous build. It made the column quite unstable and at the time I didn't have powercontroller so I didn't use it much. 2 meters of convectorpipe was ~300kr. Another interesting item would be intercoolers used for turbocharged applications, but they are bloody expensive.
BTW, just noticed that I did the main run at 1:1 refluxratio 8O

Well, I did some modifications and am just now finishing a test run. I put the condenser back to close horizontal position (which means i don't need a fan) and added a potscrubber to the reflux condenser pipe. I also insulated the column since it was uninsulated during the first test.
I started the run with 7 liters of water (to cover heating elements) and ~3 liters of heads and tails from previous run. I took the heads by the book (1.5-2 hours to equilibrate and collect) and collected ~2.5dl before pure ethanol was coming out. I took ~2 liters pure stuff out (with max. power), and when I went to collect the next 0.5 liters a very slight amount of tails had contaminated it. Right now the column top temperature is 92C (equals ~67% ethanol) and the stuff is coming out at 80%.
IMO this shows that such convector head works as well if not better as conventional heads. This horizontal version seems to loose about 20-40W in cooling power when compared to vertical. The difference is that horizontal works without a fan.
Pjolteren, I'm not quite sure I got the question right, but the reducer at the bottom hurts nothing unless it's too small and causes flooding.

Riku, you got it right. The question was if a much smaller coupling to the
bolier increased the time needed to finnish the run. If you had a 64mm
coupling to the boiler, you could run a bit faster having the same quality
on your stuff....

I didn't notice much difference when I inserted the scrubber, but then again there were too many other changes to say it for sure. Next test is propably with 2 meters pipe on reflux side to see how much added reflux helps.

FP's idea is splendid but it requires a LM type head while this convector head is of CM type. Convectors can be used for LM heads as well but it's not as straightforward as CM design. When FP figures out how to make the LM head stand or slow inbetween cuts I'll consider switching back to LM.
